  • No expert, But its more important when in the TT position hanging outta ya ass!! :-)
    Smoother, stronger strokes!! GRRRRRR!!

  • converted for commuting from a 1998 Peugeot Team Festina 'Virenque'. would look nicer without the tensioner but it's for riding to work. :-)

sprayed with Halfords Grey Primer and 2 coats of Halfords VW Bright Orange.

  • Beer, that bike look lovely, good job on the respray.

I think you need to lose one more link on the chain, it's a bit slack.

  • I'd slice my knees open in the cut cable ties!!

thought of that- filed down and will be taped probably...

  • Tommy boy, it's half 1 in the morning, have some bloody patience.

and don't forget it'll be bank holiday soon, no one will be around.

  • In practice I have a silent 34/16 that is as smooth as anything I have used.

For the same reason, I have 27/13 on my SS MTB; it's not as smooth as the 46/17 on my hack bike, although it's less noticeable off road, obviously, since there's so much else rattling around.

cheers Ed. The tensioner slips a bit after a few rides due to the mech hanger being slightly bent, but on the look out for a replacement.

I suppose a 13 is pretty small so going to be pushing it a bit. I can't go under 16 as White Industries don't make a smaller freewheel and not worth using anything else (unless I ever move to a freehub).

Remember using a 9t on a BMX which just looks wrong and is asking for drivetrain issues but then not exactly made for riding far. Although could have an interesting looking gearing with a 20t chainring!

That's probably due to having too much slack, happen to me, until I shorten the chain and it no longer slip, even when the mech hanger was bent.

I've got a 9t BMX driver on my roller bike, and it is indeed as rough as a badger's arse. The 56t chainring at the other end is as smooth as the proverbial baby's bum, so it's swing and roundabouts :-)

  • that's roughly 168gear inches

(and 9 skid patches for the fixie skidder curious out there)

  • current project. still needs..........everything

  • Raleigh Flyer, man I forgot I rode all the way from new cross to wimbledn on a flat front tyres after picking it up for £30.

165", and no skid patches as it's a freewheel.

  • It's a beaut. When I've a bit more time it's getting a complete overhaul

  • i'd slice my knees open in the cut cable ties!!

    needs MOAR cable ties!

  • Hey Beer, What Tensioner is that?

  • Looks the same as the DMR ones but with a different branding. I hear they are not very good. The type with a spring and jockey wheel, like surly (I haz) are supposed to be a lot better.

  • A kockey wheel would have to be better, but it may get on your nerves after a while with all it's bull.

  • The DMR "Tension Seeker" is first class shite, avoid it. Get a proper sprung one. I think Surly make one?

  • Hey Beer, What Tensioner is that?

it's a Gusset Bachelor which appears to be one of the better fixed tensioners. It's done 2 weeks of commuting since i finished the bike, so about 200 miles, and is pretty quiet. only cost £13. bargain.

  • a proper sprung one make all the difference, I've tried the Surly and that work perfectly.

I also tried a no-named one I got for cheap, work perfectly well, once your chain is nice and short enough to give enough tension on the chain.

  • put the decals on today, such a satisfying procedure when it goes right. i will upload pictures when i get to my own computer. got all of Tel's groupset looking shiny and lovely on it also.
