^ I'd not let these monkies near a spoke key.

*except for that one time but they had been tucked away so carefully, how was i meant to tell?

All four of you...

Righto, seeing as you're all here already. Who wants to build a pair of 29er wheels for me? I will soon have hubs and rims and will buy some spokes. They will need to be strong enough to support my IMMENSE WEIGHT and I pay only in girly giggles.

Sainsburys take girlie giggles, so thats ok.
Are you going on the 29er trip up north? If so, feedback would be appreciated. I've not built thousands of wheels, but the ones I'm building now have stopped giving any problems in 'normal' use.
Dovvles and DJ, well... I suppose one is good for paint.

Building 29er wheels is the same as building any other wheel.

Not really but I'd avoid 2 cross if running 28 holes and had limited truing abilities.
What do your 3 volunteering builders (Cheesecake Intl, Dancing James and 36x18) suggest, just out if interest?
2 cross is good for 28 holes as it gives a similar hub flange angle as 36 3 cross.

You get a lot of lateral give though.

Not in my experience if properly tensioned, the "upper cross" is at a similar level to 36 3 cross. They will always be less stiff on a like for like set-up than a 32 or 36 wheel 3 cross but people run 28 spoke wheels for the weight saving so have to excepts some compromise.

So, what's better now in my case (28h x Primato large-flange hubs x no-eyelet semi-V wolber clincher rims x my weight of 75 kg), 2 cross or 3 cross?
More factors: I do ride on roads, but not on a track. I do everyday riding, no sports/race. Seat position is normal (no pursuit bars/bullhorn). Tyres will be 700x23 slick.
Tommy, dovvles, 36x18, you all seem to know enough to find a consensus??

Escellent. Did I hear you were in Kew, DJ? That's very close. I'm picking up the hubs from Rascal at Wests this week and ordering the rims today. I'll order some spokes at the same time - which ones should I get?
@36x18: I don't think I'm going to make the 29er trip. It's right in the middle of family visiting from Oz but I haven't given up hope yet.

And ... how important are the spokes in this case? straight, single/double/triple butted?

We're now going for Sapim Race spokes and 2 cross on both wheels, better flange angle as outlined by some people here.

Thanks (Tommy), and Dovvles for advice. These were the first 28 spokers I've built, so appreciated.
OP is aware of the weight/strength compromise, & I'll show him the principles of truing when he collects so he's not dependant on a shop in the future.

Sweet... and I can't collect them due to a slipped disc... damned...
