• Hello everyone!

Just a quick question to you all:

Can anyone recommend a company around north London (N16 way perhaps) that have done a good job stripping a steel frame for you in the past?

I have stripped forks etc in the past but I'm not sure I want to go to town with paint stripper and do my frame. That being said, it does depend on how much these companies charge!

In addition, would you guys be willing to divulge how much you have paid for such services in the past?

    Thanks in advance everyone!

    Nick

  • Amourtex would do it? Prices on the website, it's not far from N16, just over the postcode border.

  • Inkymitts took the words right out my fingers.

  • might wanna take a 'gat' or 'shank' with you, what with the post code wars and all, i know a guy who could sort you out!

  • Armourtex look pretty good guys, thanks.

I'll give them a call and see what they can do. I'm thinking stripping to bare metal and making some oxidised copper 'decals' to rivet/adhere to the frame.

Armourtex have a minimum order per colour but as I don't actually want any colour applied, maybe they might waiver this. I could always laquer myself at home.

  • I think I must be missing something here. I don't understand what could be overly daunting about stripping a frame? A pain in the arse perhaps, that would be the main reason I could see someone going to a company to have it done for them. I'm sure a can of Nitromors and a bitta elbow grease would be exponentially cheaper than having it done "professionally".

  • Maybe you live in flats and don't have a good place to do it.

  • Hey, if he wants to laquer himself at home leave him to it. Everyone needs a hobby.

  • Nothing daunting really, no. Just possibly a pain like you say. Paint stripper is nasty stuff and I'd be willing to spend a few quid if someone could use an alternative method and get the job done neatly. That being said, I did just buy some Nitromors today to begin the process...

Should it all go testes upwards then Armourtex are only a phone call away I guess.

  • I've stripped two bikes and it is bloody annoying but cheap. Long sleeves, thick gloves and glasses of some sort.

  • Stripping with nitromores is a horrible and thankless task.
There are better paint strippers that are designed specifically for metals - nitromores is made as a consumer DIY product that won't fuck wood, and isn't all that on decent metal paint jobs.

Once you've added up the price of the stripper and a couple of brushes, and the hassle of doing the job, Armourtex is a very reasonable option.

  • Agreed that it can be a horrible, horrible task. I've stripped a load of frames and parts and it's never easy. Apart from Nitromors, I've used this stuff that most hardwares seem to carry:

That said, it's performance was pretty much identical to that of Nitromors.

I've heard many americans say that whenever it comes to stripping paint from metal, they swear by this stuff:

Makes sense as it's been designed purely to remove paint layers from metal as opposed to removing paint from all kinds of different surfaces with an emphasis on retaining the structural integrity of the underlying materials. I've never seen it on our shores though, I'd love to get my hands on some even just to compare it to Nitromors.

  • I have used this in the past with great results. The paint just bubbled up and I was able to brush it away, but the bikes were painted with really thing italian paint. you know the kind that falls off easily.

  • I want some Aircraft Remover!

Say 'Goodbye' to pesky aeroplanes with one simple spray. Use repeated applications on their nests and areas where aircraft congregate to prevent repeated investations.

Also works on Hovercraft some types of Hydrofoils.
