  • Polo isn't structured like other sports and that's a great side of it. None of the good players in London have had any structured sessions as far as I'm aware, they have just gained skill through playing with and learning from better players.

And up to now it was the only way to learn, doesn't mean it's the best way. You don't see professional sportspeople learning their sports through just playing better people, they learn through hours and hours of training every week.

Anyway, that's beside the point, as there is no other option at the moment.

I've said that for these QR sessions, if anyone wants some pre- throw in sessions, to turn up at 6.30pm and we'll do some basic stuff before games.

That's exactly what I want, so I'm in.

  • I was thinking about doing this, once I get my own mallet sorted. Was wondering though, with the talk of pissing off residents, where to go.

e.g. Would it be ok if I swung by downham on my way home for a knock around on a monday or wednesday evening?

Well, let's do this sometime, probably best to use one of the other east courts if we can, Monday's are fine for me (Wednesday is Souths)

  • sorry, couldn't help it :)

  • so your trying to be a 'professional polo player' then?

  • sorry, couldn't help it :)

    Yes, this.

Polo isn't a professional sport though, and that's the charm of it for many people. It's a community game and I hate to use the work Urban, but it sort of works for this description.

Having played sport at national league, if it had training sessions where I was learning different facets and running drills, I probably wouldn't be interested. Polo is for me, and probably a lot of people a 'grass roots' sport to coin another over used phrase, and that is it charm.

As I said, most people 'train' in their own time which again is to be encourage.

Now, I MUST do some work.

  • so your trying to be a 'professional polo player' then?

Wouldn't you want to get paid to polo all day?

But in seriousness, if I'm going to play a sport I want to do it as well as I possibly can, which for me means dedicated training. Otherwise it's just a hobby. But that's just me.

  • dedicated training means 6 x 1664 on a weds and still able to hit the target.

  • Haha. I'll try that one...

    Sigh

    I'm up for this.

  • anyone else a bit thrown by the use of "casual" in the title.meh

  • mallets in a bowl.

  • So, I'm slowly piecing together my first polo bike, and obviously the most important part is the plastic discs that go over the wheels, (and the design on them).

I was wondering why people don't put the disc *inside *the spokes, (so you wouldn't need to tie it on or cut it into a slight cone shape)

    :)

  • the disc is there to protect the spokes, so putting the disc in the inside defect the purpose of it.
the design is NOT the main purpuse of the disc

now, question, if everybody have it outside.... everybody is doing it wrong? no one before me have think lots about the best way to fix the discs?

Don't worry about your bike, as long as it's safe and not your pride and joy just get down and play.(What I did and now I'm hooked).

  • I still need some estate agents board. Work has taken over my life, though.

  • there's a massive "loose chips" board on clapham common south side road (last time i checked). Looks ideal!

  • What do you mean by "loose chips"?

  • Hey Wicksie, I'm looking to start a bike polo soc at uni, roughly startin september 2010, don't suppose you'd be willing, if i popped over to east london, to show me the ropes? I haven't played before properly and have basically no equipment to hand (I lie, I have one child's hockey stick and three helmets and plan to use the hire bikes) so basically any help would be brilliant! If this works out well, there should be a new court opening for play in kensington!

  • Do you mean the boris bikes?

  • Which uni?

And wicksie isn't east... But she can tell you that... As a clue beginners is in south London.

Boris/ken bikes would make perfect polo bikes, souths on a Wednesday is a few metres from a stand so it wouldn't be hard to pick up a bike and play... I'd be only slightly surprised if no-ones tried yet! But if you have to ride you'll be wasting some of your free half an hour!

  • Which uni?

I'm guessing from the username its Heythrop university...

  • It is indeed Heythrop University, we have right outside us a hiring station (30 seconds away) so that covers that aspect and we have a tennis court (hopefully) to play on

My main problem at the moment is equipment and experience (minor problems..) If anyone fancied showing/doing a tutorial for the us novices once we are a bit more established that'd be brilliant,

I have to put on some sort of freshers faire demonstration first, so basically, I need to make at least 6 mallets on the cheap and get hold of some helmets (Health and safety via the Union) just so we can hold some sort of rudimentary game to convince my societies officer that this a good idea and thus give me money to play back for the cost ski poles etc in the first place..

  • hey,
is anyone heading down to beginners polo tomorrow night?
thought i would double check before i cycle 10 miles from home and discover I'm the only one there!
