• Wow.

Maybe people are exaggerating the need for the self-ban button, but if some would find it easier to get on with a days work without the possibility of clicking the bookmark in the corner of their browser, and then finding themselves getting distracted by some DJ vs the world "popcorn", why the drama? Especially when people are often looking for reasons to procrastinate. The forum may not be the cause, but it's the tool in many cases.

i always chuckle when the world pitches into battle with me, half of them having a dig and then suggesting i step away from the keyboard

    i do like smallfurry's suggestion

but would have no one to talk to

  • +1 on self ban, if you're not interested in using it nobody's going to make you

this forum is addictive and my will power is non-existant

  • The whole gear apartheid thing is ridiculous.

The forum was conceived by a London-based cyclist and bike enthusiast, and like minds got on board very quickly. We all rode fixed, but for the most part we also had experience of riding with a freewheel, with gears, on and offroad, etc.

This meant there was a broad collective knowledge base, as well as a more well-rounded life experience than certain other more monomaniacal bike forums/communities, and was probably the secondary reason for the exponential growth of the place (the tertiary reason being synchronicity with the 'fixie' trend, and the primary reason being that I post here and you fucking love it).

+1 to this. Whilst not exactly a prolific poster, (although I have been a member of the community for quite a long time) I feel that I have learnt a lot from it and gained a lot from it, and this is precisely the reason I am happy to donate to the forum running costs. I have no problem whatsoever with the redesign and simplification suggestion, but would object to the segregation or shunning of geared stuff or other types of cycling. As other people have pointed out, lots of good things come from a variety of different areas of cycling and lots of people here enjoy a variety of types of cycling The n+1 equation is testament to this.

Not so long ago, I recall a post from Ed responding to a newcomer (on a ladies thread I think). She expressed her nascent enjoyment of cycling and the forum, but also admitted that she did not ride a fg or ss bike. Ed was supportive and welcomed her to a broad church that was as much about cycling and love thereof that being anything too exclusive. I see no reason why this should not be the way.

For all the bitching and moaning and the large numbers of unique users, there is really a core of people who contribute a lot, and unsurprisingly it is those people who are expressing opinions on here about the site. Long may the site and community continue. It has opened up a whole load of ideas and people to me that I might not otherwise have met.

Oh, and as an afterthought, I have no real objections to charging for classifieds. Not too much though, as one of the nice things about classifieds is that odd things pop up from people that you might not otherwise think about wasting your hard earned on. Don't discourage this, it's fun!

  • If Damo doesn't have the self-control to keep off here when he should be working, a self-ban button isn't the answer...he'll only be on a Derby County forum or posting more of his questionable jazz on facebook. He needs to have a long heart to heart with VeeVee...

  • Self ban button required.

    Yup.

Though I would have to obliterate the Live Updates page to achieve this.

Are you referring to the spy, VB? Please don't dispense with that. It is awesome.

I considered you a friend, Jonny. But if having a bit less self-control than you makes me less of a person, well, have a good one. And I guess that goes for Aroogha, Murts, and Cliveo as well. All heil the ubermensch of lfgss.

I procrastinate as much if not more than the next person. As another poster has said, ban button could send us procrastinators off to other forums or, as i suggested, might lead to a proliferation of aliases. My views may not be as strongly held or expressed as Jonny's. My concern lies with the unanticipated consequences of such a button when the answer - self discipline - lies in front of us and is something that most of us, as cyclists, possess, however deeply it may be buried at times.

  • Yeah, but there could just be a button.

  • Clive

Shall we start an Lfgss 12 step program

The problem is total abstinence is required

Maybe a Non-Proliferation of Alias and Weapons Treaty is the answer? We can arrange to meet up in a rail car in the middle of a forest to sign up and agree not to perpetuate the evil that has become the alias...

I really don't understand the geared apartheid argument one bit. If people think geared bikes 'dilute' what the forum is about then I don't know what they think the football thread, memes, music, digital photography competitions, favourite movie stars or whatever the fuck is doing. Fact is most folks, either through getting into riding fixed and evolving, or just out of natural interest, have a geared bike and enjoy riding and talking about them just as much. Its perhaps folk trying to impose their rather narrow ideas of what the forum 'should be' that are more of an issue to its enjoyment-I think its great there is so much variety on here and that people who are all united by an interest in cycling have the freedom to share other interests with each other as it makes it more of a community. Goes back to the same basic thing-if you look at a thread and know its not your bag of beans just don't fucking click on it.

  • Imagine all the posts...

    "James, please, push the button!"

  • I'd push that fucking button right now.

  • i'm on the fncking button

Read back a little, Velocio was talking about geared classifieds, not banning all geared discussion.
I agree that all of the other non-FG/SS stuff that gets talked about would dilute the forum more than geared discussion, but its all of that talk that makes this place what it is.

  • bet its one of mc carthys fav songs

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJDGcxAf9D8&ob=av2e

  • go balki!!

    push her button!!

    shit i would

  • Imagine if DK didn't actually own a FG/SS, how mad would that be?

chuckles and shakes head at the very thought

  • The problem with the button is that it wouldn't stop you looking at other people's posts. That would lead to inevitable frustration and the creation of an alias. The problem with aliases is that., although occasionally amusing, they can be confusing and, in some ways, alienating.

Rumour has it that he owns a geared bike but just doesn't talk about it.

  • The forum may not be the cause, but it's the tool in many cases.
    No, you're a tool.

  • What do you have against Object though? Fine pillar of the forum is that man.
    +

  • I'm only against him being inanimate. He should be perpetually writhing in ecstasy, but I can't facilitate that 24/7.
I tried writing in ecstacy but generally find that writing is better acheived through the use of Ketamine.
