  • Anyone built one of these?

Apparently a basic kit is $37.50, but with it attached to one spoke you have to be going at 15mph - the more you have the slower you can go for the image to work etc...

    Silly, but cool!

  • i've got some of these, fun but weighty http://www.hokeyspokes.com

  • Got some hokey spokeys too, real critical mass stuff !

I wanted to buy the POVs ages ago but the kit requires quite a bit of input - soldering + need a PC to input images + a bit of programming as far as I remember (?)

  • i got the kit from a mate for christmas - need a soldering iron to try it out
but it looks a tad complicated and a resistor got broken in transit :(

  • yep - i have a kit - as yet its not built - my soldering leaves a lot to be desired!

There are lots and lots of bits - plus it took over 6 months to get delivered from the states as they thought it was a bomb....

  • looks fugly in the day light, all that circuit board and stuff... hmmn. there are these too:

  • Hi!
I found this site googling for SPOKEPOV stuff...
    I've built one of these
    http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=_UNL3M1DSHU
If you need help building one I can help out. I have all the 'off the shelf' parts needed to build 9 more units, this DOESNT include the bare pcbs, programmed chip or magnets. If you are interested in getting some sets email me @ thcforme@hotmail.co.uk I'm in SW london.
    Thanks,
    Paul

  • ummmm, how much?

  • If you buy all the stuff you want direct from them but can't build it yourself I could build it for £20. If you want to use the parts I have stocked up (if I still have them) and buy the rest from them I'm just looking for enough bits from them so I can do one more wheel for myself for free :0)

  • were can i get these in the uk guys

  • You can't!

That's the people who make it and where you buy all the stuff

How to put it together. Works good but you'll get thru loads of mini cable ties ;)

  • Ok, I've finally finished building my ladyada Spoke POV kit after a lot of soldering.
Have them mounted and working - just need to get some good graphics to upload on it - the first attempt will be the HTFU cog logo that featured on here a while back. I'll take pics and post.
The next project will hopefully be RGB full colour POV (mine is red led's only) - but that's going to take some planning.

Incidently if anyone wants a set of these but can't solder, I will build them for payment in cake, burgers and cider (in that order).

    Pics tomorrow!

  • Clefty, will you be bringing that baby down to Souths?

  • Not this week - it's on my spare wheel at the moment and I need to program it properly, next week - if it's dry - It's not very rain friendly!

  • OK!! Well after building I found that the Serial dongle to programe the thing was as slow as a two legged dog, so I ordered the USB dongle and after various battles with customs charges and royal fail, I got it on Tuesday and assembled it tonight.
The speed is a million times better with the USB dongle, it now takes approximately 15 seconds to load an image into one of the 4 banks, as opposed to 5-10 minutes!
Anyway - here's a video of it on my spare wheel - it seems to like big blocky pics - and you can animate it by putting a slightly different pic in each image bank, at the moment it's a static pic - but I'm working on the animated space invader.

  • I'm flogging my spoke pov kit on weaselbay if anyone is interested!
