You get a lot of lateral give though.

Not in my experience if properly tensioned, the "upper cross" is at a similar level to 36 3 cross. They will always be less stiff on a like for like set-up than a 32 or 36 wheel 3 cross but people run 28 spoke wheels for the weight saving so have to excepts some compromise.
