if anyone's interested, i'm under the impression that it's to do with the angle of the thread: the pitch is the same but angles are different. most pedals are BSC angle (60 degrees), campag seem to use a thread that is 55 degrees.
common advice seems to be just ram it in and it'll be fine. retapping with a BSC threaded tap sounds even better.
