thanks tel for the offer but ill keep the hoods, the cinelli criterium bars were 26.4mm and they fitted perfectly hehe. I am a short guy so the bike just fits...pic coming up from driveside just for you. I would have preferred the raleigh bars you offered me but shame they wouldnt have fitted on the stem. Spent an age cleaning all the gunk from the chainset, now shiny shiny!

The brick should be on the non-drive side :-)

I'm sure. There will always be people who will persist in using old technology even though it has been superseded in function (and form on some bikes). That doesn't mean that downshifters don't suck compared to Ergos, they do, it just means that you are willing to sacrifice better function so that you are using the 'correct' technology for the period of the bike.

Horses for courses, but I can't think of a situation (when riding) where downtube shifters are preferable to Ergos.

I was looking at it thinking of what it reminded me of and then I got it-
Chas Roberts White Spider MTB - I used to dream of having one of those.
I guess its the fillet brazing, colour scheme, and sloping top tube.
I wish I had a pic to post next to it to compare.

I have them on all the geared bikes except one. With good kit they work as well as ergos and are far easier to set up.

The advantage ergos have is not indexing but the ease with which you can change gear, especially up hill or on a corner.

i would agree with KC- i don't like ergos... shimano and campagnolo sell them as up to date but they are over-engineered imho - i love that dt shifters aren't indexed so you just flip up and flip down for a perfect silent gear change faster than any indexed shifters -

but what do i know? i usually forget i have gears and only change when i can't get up a hill. (god bless singlespeed ruining my brain)
i preferred my retro XT thumb shifters to gear pods or gripshift on the mountain bike - i think it's just preference rather than whether one is better or worse, but i reckon DT shifters are lighter/faster/easier to maintain so that tells me they out perform anything else (for me)

p.s you ever tried servicing a shimano ergo lever? they may as well be disposable!

It's different strokes for different folks/purposes.

IMO the best shifters are mtb trigger-style ones. They're faster and easier to use than anything road bikes, old or young, have to offer...but then they're not all that fitting on a period road bike are they.

Looks almost unrideable. Mind you i've seen some lo-pros with a track stem and drops (although i think thats purely to get everything lined up, rather than to ride)
