You could go with 50 of your best fixie-skiddy friends... have a 'lil chat' with said alleged owner, then we could all argue about it then vote...

When a thief is found out, they have their caps lock key confiscated.

Anyone ever get bored, phone up people selling bikes on Gumtree and ask for frame numbers just to see what they do?
Just curious.

Tell your friend to watch episdoes of "My name is Earl" until he gets the message?
I once stole the boxed set of that from HMV, top viewing.

Regarding the OP's question, I wouldn't buy the cheap and clearly stolen bike, I'd ride something cheap and shitty instead. If you're too poor to replace your good bike, then you ride a shit one, it's simple. After all, what gives a person the right to having to have a great bike? "You cut your coat according to your cloth."

+1 At the moment I would rather have my geared MTB that is too big for me than ride around on someone else's pride and joy which had been stolen from them.
It is also called Karma. What goes around comes around.

It is fairly easy to spot stolen bikes on gumtree. The description is usually very poor, the seller has no clue of what he's selling to the degree that he doesn't know the frame size or how to properly measure it. absolutely no idea about the technical specification. Will never give you a proper home address or so. He will usually insist on seeing you at some dodgy area and try to compete the deal as quick as possible for just about any money. Most of the times he will be telling you that he flies tomorrow to Maldives for holiday and desperately needs some pocket money.
So when you see or hear stuff like that steer clear.
Just my two cents :-) -

It's not even particularly cheap to be fair,
You could get a nicer mixte bike than a heavy falcon for £85. -

I think the guy that makes them is on here... Or at least a guy making bamboo frames in London has been on the polo bit... Can't be that many bamboo frame makers in London?!

^ yes, I can't remember his name but there was a kiwi on a self made bamboo bike on the Oxford ride a few months back.

Well, I think I've won a bike on ebay. Would be nice if the seller could tell me the address to pick it up from.
Did anyone ever see a bike on Gumtree that wasn't stolen?
For the police to act they have to be able to prove a bike was stolen, usually they need to prove who it was stolen from. So if it isn't marked or registered on immobilise etc they cannot counter the claim of a person who says they bought it from a very nice elderly gentleman in a pub.
