• Just got a KHS Flite 100 size 55. It's a bit on the smaller side for me and when the seat tube shows the maximum line in the "peeping hole" (horizontal with the top tube) on the frame I'd need an extra 4-5 cm to be comfortable. The current seatpost is 26.8, 22.5 cm long.

Would buying a longer seatpost (40cm or so) and raising the seatpost 5cm still put undue stress on the frame or will it be fine?

    It's too small for you.

  • I've realized that, but I can't do much about it.

  • Bite the bullet.
Buy yourself a second frame that fits. 531 ftw of course.
Transfer your bits to the new frame and sell the old one.

  • I got the bike today. Sorry, but I'm not going to buy a new frame. Perhaps in time.
    Will the seat tube hold?

  • Dont over extend your current one, leaving tiny amounts of seatpost in concentrates the force in that small area at the top near the welds/clamp area, just buy a longer one and use that, 350mm is quite common. That should be enough.

  • Longer seatposts are fine. As long as there is enough of the post inside the frame, it should be okay. The longer the seatpost the better,
as the stress on the seattube is spread further along its length.

Photo below is of Bowery with 400mm SystemEX seatpost.

  • not_hip, how tall are you by the way? And were your other bikes, or your girlfriend's bike sized 55cm also?

  • I'm 187. Inseam 90 cm. The Flite 100 55cm should be a bit more like a 57cm they say. I was quite surprised it was so small. Did a test ride and really enjoyed it, guess it would work with a longer seatpost.
Considering selling it now though. Decisions, decisions.
Could upload a picture tomorrow to show what it looks like.

  • Okay, so you're 6foot (187cm) tall. A 58cm probably would have been closer to your correst size I believe.

That said, that picture of the Bowery is actually my own, and it is essentially a 52cm frame, but fits with the longer seatpost. Others, like BMMF, have rightly pointed out that I should have a larger size, but it has still been comfortable. My 54cm other bike is more comfortable, so it shows the truth of the comments. I'm shorter than you, so a 56cm would be a stretch for me......I tried one.

  • If you bought it today take it back and get the right size

It was bought and shipped from the UK, but he lives in Sweden. Its why its not easy to exchange.

Amazing really, as he had done all the measurements and everything.

  • Problem is too, there are no 57cm available. That is why I gambled and went for the 55.

  • So what you're saying, is that the colour was of such importance to you, that it made you make that gamble? All I can say, it that its true that we all prioritize things in different ways. Personally, I wish you had chosen a colour and make that maybe you had not originally preferred, than riding a bike that comes up a bit small.

It's not that I haven't made a similar error myself, but I've learned that fit comes above looks, in the grand scheme of things.

Not sure what you're saying here. But, nope, the gold was not available in 57 either. It had nothing to do with colour.
Perhaps you meant that there were other bikes with the Reynolds 520 frame?

Anyways, I stumbled across a taller seatpost and I now enjoy the ride. :)
