Me too. I've been in Normandy, where the beaches are not pretty, but full of food.
If you see people doing this, join them.
With a small rake, a bucket and a bit of 'help', you can pick up enough clams for 4 people easily.
Let them soak in sea water for an hour or so, drain, rinse
and add to an onion, garlic, chilli and white wine base. When they've opened, discard 9 out of 10 shells, add some cream, and spoon over some linguini to avoid the grit at the bottom of the pot.
Popular all round.
When you've done that once too often, just boil them to open, remove the meat, cover with garlic butter and bread crumbs, and grill until sizzling.
