Here's a snippet from the email sent by TfL to "pioneer members "of the scheme today*
"Despite the odd spell of inclement weather this week, Londoners have been getting
out and about on our bikes in ever greater numbers. Over 45,000 'Pioneer' members
have now joined and together you have cycled well over 100,000 Cycle Hire journeys,
delivering a huge boost to London's cycling revolution. The busiest day this week
was Wednesday, 11 August when almost 14,000 journeys were undertaken over the
course of 24 hours.
What we've found really interesting is that 93 per cent of all journeys have been* *
half an hour or less and therefore, after the access charge, completely free!
We're delighted that Londoners are finding it a healthy, green – and cheap – way to
get around town."*
It's not surprising to see that a huge majority of trips are under 1/2 hour making them free. It's brilliant how popular this.
So if Boris is considering extending the scheme towards the suburbs, should they considering extending the free period or would it be better to maintain the free 1/2 hour to help with the even distribution of the bikes?
