why's that? are non Rohloff hub gears generally seen as being not so hot for a touring bike?

It's all about gear ratio range for fully loaded touring. Plus it's nice to have small steps between gears to maximise efficiency and minimise fatigue. While the Imotion9 does have a large ratio range, it's still way behind the rohloff.
