If I'm ever going to spend big(ish) money on a bike I do a quick brakedown of how much you'd get if you split:
F&F
Wheels
Group (or chainset if fixed)
The other bits usually = ~£50-100
If it adds up to a similar amount then I usually go for it.
I don't like overpaying, but I've come to realise ppl get way too hung up on spending an extra £10-30*, when it's not really big money and often you'll just kick yourself later for being cheap.
*this rule only applies to complete bikes - with parts you must always remain vidulent!
