erm, is this fake?
It's a very good fake it is as it has all the pantographed features of a Pinarello I owned that was a similar vintage, i.e. the GP (for Giovanni Pinarello) on the tops of the seat stays and BB shell.

It's like he used to have a bike with a rear 5 speed cassette so someone told him the inner chain ring on the front is 5 gears and with the outer makes 10... Inner 5, outer 10.
He's nwo applying that to a bike with an 8 speed cassette, his logic being the outer front is means "a 10" plus the 8 on the rear cassette means it's an 18.
I dunno, obviously the poor chap's very confused, he can't even spell his own name correctly. =(
I must be bored and actually did ask him to clarify. Response below, it's perfectly clear to me now (I suggested that the 8 speed cassette perhaps meant it had 16 speeds):
"listen its 18 speed take it or leave it.
or learn maths 8 + 10 = 16 em not.
8 + 10+ 18 fact. and i know for sure that every chain wheel on a crank adds 5 gears so 3 chain wheels is 15 gears. so please get your facts right ." -

"yes the gears have been upgraded as it now as campagnolo wheels set. with a 8 speed cassette and the crank as two chain wheels so the crank = 10 gears with two chain wheels, as each chain wheel = 5 gears. then add the rear gears 8, together = 18 gears regards garry"
def seems like he thinks each front chaining is 5 gears. its more likely a 16

Ask him also to confirm for sure that the rear hub definitely doesn't have any internal gears.

Thinking to bid on this as a cheap geared bike. Any views on what a reasonable limit would be?

Alan Bonds, Bob Searl, Gary Fisher, Charlie Cunningham, Steve Potts and Tom Ritchey disagree.
True, I really like the Elgin, just thought it might not appeal to many people's tastes especially if they wanted a bike to ride around London.

Too big for me!
here is the hard sell
vintage raleigh frame, light tubing (i think 531 or 501), 58cm frame c-t-c (for 5"10 +), excellent base for fixed gear or single speed project, and also a geared conversion.
It has horizontal dropouts, comes with handle bars, seatpost, saddle, rear and front brake. cranks, chain, pretty much everything in the pictures (no pedals). The frame is in good condition, minor scratches, can accept 700c/27" wheels. Comes with a back and front derailer.Looking for £60 ono

Thoughts on this,
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Roy-Thame-Racing-road-bike-cycle-bicycle-1970s-classic-/190429713263?pt=UK_Bikes_GLIt has been re listed, i lost out the first time on by only £2. I think it went for £92 first time round, imguessing the buyer had issues.
Worth a punt again?

2x8 = 18 gears? He's quite adamant see questions!
Posting options are nearly as complicated! I should start charging a packing fee, missing a trick there:
i will post this item and will cost £25 for sending as it will cost me no less then £11.99 posting fee + i have to add insurance but this is your own option for the insurance which will be a cost of about £5 pounds. so now the posting cost we are at £16.99 + i will need to add a packing fee charge so £25 will be ok. inless you know of a service that can pack it for you.
I'd been staring at that trials frame for a while.
out of my price range.
this is also nice:
