I must be bored and actually did ask him to clarify. Response below, it's perfectly clear to me now (I suggested that the 8 speed cassette perhaps meant it had 16 speeds):

8 + 10+ 18 fact. and i know for sure that every chain wheel on a crank adds 5 gears so 3 chain wheels is 15 gears. so please get your facts right ."

def seems like he thinks each front chaining is 5 gears. its more likely a 16
