Cone on crankarm?

Posted on
  • Not sure I'm using the right word, but I got a cone on the inside of the driveside crankarm (made for 2 chainrings (52&42)).

Does it have any use (running fixie with only the 42t chainring) exept it prevents me from using chainguard? I though I might just file it down.

So.... What is it and can safely I remove it?

  • Don't know if it has a name, sometimes it's on the chainring to stop the chain sliding down behind the crank arm if it comes off.

  • Yeah it can go.

  • The function is to prevent the chain from dropping between crank arm and outer chain ring in case the chain derails.
If you're riding a geared bike, it makes sense when you're riding on rough surface, have your deraileurs badly adjusted, or shift in a brutal way (or a combination).
For a single speed it doesn't make sense, as long as you keep your chain line and chain tension okay.
If it's in the way and prevents the use of a chain guard, just remove it. Doesn't harm.

  • Yep, makes sense. Cheers!
