get a smallish adjustable spanner, tighten against rim, then bend out/in gently

i would not file them down, follow mumbles advice but be gentle and then re true the wheel
actually have you tried relieving the tension a little and then retrue the wheel?
if you are doing the mumbles thing, again i'd suggest you release tension in the spokes beforehand

I don't think the spanner tip will work, or the retrueing, (though they also need that), the rims aren't dinged as in bent, it is more like there is a small chip/metal has been moved, with, in one case a sharp edge, hence me considering filing away the sharp edge. Just wondered if there were any catastophic consequences that might result from a bit of judicious use of the file/dremel.

I've filed rims before. You just need to be aware that it has been done and don't be surprised when your rim folds in the weak spot.

hence why i would not want to file the rim
i would try the alternatives first
and if filing just remove the sharp edge

Really? No, I would file until you hit the rim tape. That way you are sure to have removed any bumps.
Bought some second alloy wheels for my beater/commuter bike, a vast improvement over the original steel wheels. The front rim has a couple of dings/dents, presumably from being kerbed/ridden with a flat?
These are somewhat irritating producing a noticeable blip while braking and are no doubt greatly speeding the demise of my brake pads. Is it ok/wise to have a go at filing them down next time I have the wheels off?
Has anyone done this/similar, any tips?
Thanks in advance.
