Which bb for a older campy road crank

  • trying to work this out for a friend.
could be wildly guessing a ISO 107mm?
    for a 42mm chailine

    and yes did search (kinda)

  • Depends which era crank, actually murtle. Presume you're talking about Nuovo Record ... If it's pre 78 (I think it is 78 anyway) you need one length, post another, to get clearance on the inner ring for the road double. Are the back ring supports still on the crank?

Both of them are pretty long. I recall the spindle will need to be 115 for the older ones, and 112 for the later ones, to do this. I may have got this the wrong way round. I'm trying to find something on the web to confirm it. Not certain about chainlines as this is less important for gears as you know.

Basically, suck it and see. But 107 will almost certainly be way too short.

  • ah, he's going to be putting it on a blb bob jackson, so only running front ring, the supports are still there

  • So it is NR?

  • what is NR when it's at home?
    not right?
    nearly ready
    neat records
    nob rider

  • oh Murtle
    Nuovo Record

  • something like that yes

    old 'o record

  • You should try a Campagnolo one. I believe this company attempt to manufacturer low-end cycling equipment. :)

  • OK, I found it.

    http://www.bicycleclassics.com/bottom.html

Look down the bottom, they got the length for 77-87 as 114.5, and so pre-'77 is the 112.

Ok so if it's 77 or later, you'll need 114.5, if it's earlier you'll need 112. 111 might just be ok, you can get those easily (Veloce). However I can't guarantee what chainline they'll give.

The only way I can see of being sure of a perfect chainline will be some luck, or a Royce floating BB.

  • great

now is that for a chainline on the front ring?
sometimes it does it for the middle of the two

  • ummm yeah you may be right there. But I don't know what the standard middle-of-sprockets chainline is for a road wheel ... is it 42mm as well? Really I'd say the most important thing is that you get the cranks clear of the chainstay, anything like an accurate chainline would just be a lucky bonus, for me.

Royce BB @ 112 if the cranks are really old, 114 if newer. It'll be fine, though fucking expensive.

  • thanks cuntychops. x

  • Not sure about N/R, but modern Campag (up until UT) brings the inner ring in at roughly 42mm (it's oficially 43.5 for between the rings), using (obviously) the appropiate BB.

Nowt wrong with running fixed off the inside of the spider arm....

  • cheers sam

  • One other thing to confuse the issue. If your cranks have been fitted and removed alot, the aluminium inside the crank taper has more wear so you may need an extra long axle. I have the same issue on a set of Campag Gran Sport cranks which should use a 114.5 mm but this length is too short now . Its gonna be suck it and see.

  • I'm using a 111mm Centaur with my old campag cranks. They look like the ones Skully posted but no idea what year they're from. Inner ring supports have gone from the cranks and there's just enough chainstay clearance - wouldn't fit if the supports were still there.

  • i would of thought a 111mm centaur as well on outer ring for a 'fixed' 42-43mm chainline.

  • cheers guys and dale

  • Yeah, good point dale, I did exactly that on my JRJ. The supports were about 2 mil away from the non-dimpled stay. If the stay on this frame is dimpled that will help, murts.

  • did u start all this for me?? next pizza is on me. and for Ben too!!
