All four bikes that I've found handed in to the police failed to get claimed.
I don't know if they've centralised lost/found property these days, but in the past it was done on a station by station basis. So you lost something in Southwark, reported it at Southwark and it got handed in at Greenwich, unless you contacted all the other stations in the area to check, it would happily continue to sit in Greenwich forever.
It's only 28 days before bikes become the property of the finder these days.
Also, check before you trudge down there with it - some stations won't take bikes at all these days (like Watford, for example) because they have no space for storage any longer, so they ask you to store it at your home.
