• LATE EVENING EDIT: Contrary to earlier reports, the Hackney Gazette reports that the rider did not die:

    http://www.hackneygazette.co.uk/content/hackney/gazette/news/story.aspx?brand=HKYGOnline&category=news&tBrand=northlondon24&tCategory=newshkyg&itemid=WeED05%20Aug%202010%2017%3A46%3A04%3A413

The earlier report was apparently premature, but it is what a number of people heard at the scene:

This just in, as reported by Hackney Cyclists Secretary Ben Edmonds:

[quote]I am very sorry to report that at approximately 14:00 today, a cyclist was killed by a black cab at the corner of Graham Road and Navarino (map: http://goo.gl/maps/WNhV ). I was just passing the scene and spoke to a police officer and a witness. I also managed to listen in on a conversation the witness was having with a reporter from the Hackney Gazette. The cyclist, a white woman of around 30 years old, was travelling south across Graham Rd and was struck by the cab who was going west towards Dalston. From what I could tell she was riding an older style blue folding bike; but I cannot say for sure.
    RIP. :(

That junction has good sightlines and while motor traffic often travels very fast along there, I'm not aware of any significant collision record there. Terribly tragic.

EDIT: Kiell reports that the crash apparently took place earlier, just past noon:

I passed by this accident at around 12.30pm (took place around 1210-12.20pm by my estimate)

  • Hope you pull through lady.

  • Awful news. RIP.

  • My heart always misses a beat seeing these threads. Terrible news.

  • Terrible news, although I agree that traffic along Graham Rd is often going at quite a lick. You often have quite a wait on your hands if you are holding out for a sizeable gap.

  • RIP. Horrible news.

  • Awful news, I happen to know someone who fits that description and lives just there. Had to check it wasn't her. :(

    RIP.

  • I passed by this accident at around 12.30pm (took place around 1210-12.20pm by my estimate) and saw the fire crew and police at the scene. The ambulance had already departed with the casualty. I take the same route most days, crossing Graham Rd at exactly this junction.

It's not an easy crossing - traffic along Graham Road stops to turn right on to Navarino Road and it would be easy to assume that traffic behind any vehicle waiting to turn right cannot get past. My guess would be that this has caused the accident - the cyclist went to cross the junction and didn't realise that the taxi approaching could get around the car waiting to turn right.

I saw the bike lying on the pavement, the fire crew slowly removing the inflatables used to lift the taxi, and a distraught witness giving a statement to the police. My sympathies to the friends and family of the cyclist.

  • Just the headline "Rider killed", made my heart skip a beat. Shocked, and saddened.

  • Awful news RIP. :(

  • Horrid. Sympathies.

  • Thanks for these further details, Kiell. I've spoken to Ben and while he didn't hear that much, the details of the crash are far from clear. Apparently, the witness said that the cab was being driven very slowly at the time of the incident. It's too early to speculate in any case. Let's wait until the full facts come out.

  • Oliver - entirely agree. The police investigation is continuing and, yes, speculation at this stage isn't going to help so apologies if my post came across as such - certainly not my intention. Please, all, ride home safely tonight.
