Please god don't hit them with a hammer - that way frame damage lies. If you absolutely must, then the only support should be a length of heavy walled tube around the cotter pin and resting on the underside of the crank, so that all the load goes through the thickness of the crank into the tube and thence to the floor, and none of it has to transfer through any other part of the bike.
