  • yes or push or pull on the bolt to create friction as you're unturning it - so that you're undoing the nut element instead of just spinning it around.

    you can pull out the star nut thing with enough force - but apply that force to the top of the steerer and not through the headset bearings via the stem . (you'll probably need to get the stem off first -unless you have spacers above the stem you can shunt up under the top cap to get leverage in there - against the top of the steerer)

    if (once bolt is out ) you can't remove the knackered star nut out top of the steerer, you can still hammer it down further into the steerer to get another working one above it in it's place. (don't push it too much further down than you have to - you'll be unlikley to hammer it out the bottom where the brake holes are - it's butts in there) don't let a damaged nut go down that far if you decide to hammer a bad one down to get a new one i ti's place (because it could block the brake holes).

    better to have a brake fitted if you need to hammer star nut down - to prevent star going too far and blocking the holes
