Thanks ed. I think the bb had already been replaced on this one with another cheapo threadless unit, as the shell had been chamfered 45degrees inwards. The cranks look original, though. Washers had been used to force the cranks onto the new tapered spindle, which is probably why they had seized.
Apparently, oven cleaner can be used to remove anodisation from alu, so might pick up the VO BB and give it a whirl.
And yes, I was that kid who organised his lego by block type and colour.
