Convert tubeless wheel?

  • Is there anyway to convert wheels with tubeless tyres to the normal innertube & tyre ? I have a pair of Rev-x Spinergy, would be a shame not to put them to use:)

P.S. can one repair tubeless tyres or do you just have to throw it away when you get a puncture?

  • Tubless and tubular are not the same thing, I suspect you mean tubular ?

    probubly

  • If you mean tubular (and not tubless) then the answer is unfortunately no, without a bead you cannot mount normal 'clincher' tyres.

  • Reason im asking is that I saw someone with a 650c rev-x frontwheel with clincher tyre yesterday, suppose they made the wheels as clincher type too then.. unless one can change the rim (doubt it)

  • you need to get a set of tubular-to-clincher shims. get the right size for your rims though -- make sure it's a tight fit. and then go one size up with the tubes and tyres.

  • yeah i have heard of that. blue quinns uncle did that on his race bike when the system went from imperial to metric. he said it saved him bundles on tyres and repairs.
the other system is for a clincher rim to be bonded to the tubeless rim and then you use 27 inch tyres. the only problm with that is that you need three rims as you need to cut a section out and weld it in. looks good though almost like a deep vee or deep atlanta. the shim route is the better one though. hope that helps.

  • If you mean tubeless, then there are systems that will run both tubeless and clincher tyres.

If you mean tubular then you can't run clincher tyres as there is no lip to hold the tyre's bead. I'm not sure but coppi reckons you can get around this by bonding clincher rim to tubular rim. I wouldn't bother, personally.

    vs.

  • want to sell one to me?

  • P.S. can one repair tubeless tyres or do you just have to throw it away when you get a puncture?

Nobody seems to have addressed the second part of your question, although you got about the amount of piss taking you deserved for the first part.

    Tubular tyre repair:
In the first instance, try Vittoria Pit Stop. For small punctures, this might keep you going for a long time, it's cheap and doesn't require removal of the tyre from the rim. If that doesn't work, you'll need to dismantle the tyre and patch the tube, which is a hell of a procedure and not for the time-poor or skill-deficient. You can get them fixed professionally for £12, which only really makes sense for expensive racing tyres since training tubulars can be had for under £14 each.

On the wider question, Spinergys are shit and you should get some proper wheels. You'll be better off in the long run.

  • sell the springergys to a hipster and buy some proper wheels

  • sell the springergys to another hipster and buy some proper wheels

    Fixed.

  • im not a hipster

  • sell the springergys to a hipster and buy some proper wheels

    Whats wrong with them?

My post was a bit hasty, since I saw some clinchers yesterday. Was actaully thinking of keeping them until I have the time and money (and energy to get up in the morning uuuuuuuueh) to try some track.
Though they where quite low weight, specialy since im on a thight budget?

want to sell one to me?

    No.

    im not a hipster

    Even more no then?

  • I think Spinergy wheels are banned from competitive use. Too bloody dangerous in the event of an accident.

  • meh, I guess not then.

  • They stopped making the Rev-X in 1999, so they won't ever have been subjected to UCI wheel-approval testing, hence not usable in any event sanctioned by a UCI member organisation. You can still use them in domestic time trials, and some people do, so you might be best selling them on the TT Forum, you should get enough to buy a good second hand pair of Mavic Ellipse wheels, which are ideal for track beginners.

  • mhmm, they do tt with fixedgear?

  • Yes, plenty of us do.

  • In keeping with the original post, and its author, I'd like to ask a question of similarly vexing qualities. Can I turn a custom made bike into an OTP?

I too have UTFS, but can find no answers. I'm sure Glenn will not mind such questions on this thread. Its a winner.

And another. Will a titanium seatpost collar improve the speed of a racing bike, and by what percentage, exactly? Thanks.

You need to provide more information. If you use a design of the same general type as an aluminium one, keep the hoop tension constant and load the material to the same safety factor, them the Ti one will be faster due to superior aerodynamics, but by how much depends on the original speed of the bike. Assuming 50km/h, as all aero tests do in order to flatter their results even though the punters buying this stuff mostly struggle to average 40, then the speed increase is 0.0087%, or around 0.25s in a 25 mile TT. Due to complex mathematics*, slower riders will see larger time gains.

*i.e. the rich people to whom we're trying to flog this stuff are usually fat, slow and desperate for any advantage which doesn't actually involve their getting out and doing some training.

  • Tactical quote.

Super funny, because you excrutiatingly obviously haven't met me.

Very, very, very, very funny. ;)

  • I'm glad that you found some particular amusement, but, as you say, I have no idea who you are so I was taking aim at a much broader target.

  • you hit it straight on the arse :)

  • i would guess about 3%
one of these must improve performance. one titanium item instead of two steel. you would fly along with one of these in your chrome bag
