    There is an alternative explanation; all steels have about the same stiffness (give or take fractions of a percent), so bikes with thicker walled tubing are stiffer, all else being equal, and weight has only a tiny effect in flat time trials. Given round tubes, old school skinny tubes are more aero than oversized tubes. So, for a couple of pounds weight penalty, he has something as stiff as an 853OS frame and more aero, all for £600 less outlay. Who's laughing now?
