Get the cash together to get married... spend it backpacking for a year, or two. Get married in the little white chapel in Las Vagas while on ether.

We've decided to get married in Las Vegas next year, with only one member from either family, and an open innvitation to our friends. When we get back we'll get the upstairs of the Coach and Horses or somewhere similar for a few drinks with people that can't make it. The idea of matching chair covers and sashes makes me shiver.

Chair covers are the epitome of all that is wrong in the world. Take something simple and functional, cover it in something cheap and vulgur, sell it for shit loads of dosh, use it once, throw it away.

we started planning an august wedding at the beginning of this year, It soon took on a life of its own and a budget we couldn't keep up with. So we stripped it right back down to us two, and a couple of friends going to New York and tying the knot over there. The friends were chosen on the basis that its their birthdays whilst we're over there as well as ours.
I'm pretty sure I'll never regret doing it this way, and its completely stress free. -

You lot all got off lightly.
I had three weddings spanning 5 days over 3 months and two countries (all to the same person) there must have been close to 1000 people attend in total and one of them went on for three days.....
OK - I did not have to pay for them (nor could I) it must have cost my father in law close to £70K for them......but the stress was enough for me & the wife.
tbh only one of them I would do again, and that was the first one which we counted as our wedding day and that day will always remain up there with the birth of my children.

Myself and Mrs Churchy did the 'tell a few friends and run away and get married in that america' it was brilliant and I'd personally never do it any other way! Family got over it pretty quick too!
We ended up with 14 guests and seeing as none of the things we had to pay for (cake, booze, meals etc) had the word "wedding" in front of them it worked out way cheaper and more unique than we could have hoped for!
We planned very little and if that doesnt scare you 'on your big day' then its the only way to go in my humble opinion! -

Did you do it in Las Vegas?
How easy is it to get married in New York on the spur of the moment? -

We got done in California, a place called the Madonna Inn, a very silly place indeed! We had to meet up with a JP (that we'd already contacted and put a deposit on from england) the day before and register and then send off some papers after the event to get our certificate - we had them posted to a friend in the US, but I dont see why they wouldnt post to UK... I think all states laws are different though, spur of the moment still probably needs a bit of planning.

if you get married in the states, do you not have to properly register over here?

I enjoyed my wedding.
It's quite nice having a couple of days drinking with everyone you know. Don't invite people you don't like and don't waste money on cars/photos/food etc. Most people will come whatever and are glad of the excuse to have some time catching up and having a time. Don't have to go mad and all that.

We couldn't be bothered to register here and we don't really care whether its 100% 'official' over here!
As far as we are concerned we got married and thats that! -

You can turn up at the Clerks office and register, then they give you 48 hours to cool off and think about if its really what you want, then you go back and sign on the dotted line. It can be that easy.
From what i understand though, the Clerks office would be a bit like getting married in your local HSBC. -

We stayed there on our honeymoon! Very cool place. We got married last year, wife wanted the big white wedding which cost a fortune but was amazing. I could have done it either way. We then went to the States for the honeymoon, got a bleesing in the Little White Wedding Chapel and then cruised up the Route 1 staying in random motels
I'd spend more on teh honeymoon than the weddingWe got done in California, a place called the Madonna Inn, a very silly place indeed! agree with you - but you need to be sure that in the event of one of you dying that the surviving partner is entitled to things like pension & death in service benefits from the employer of the dead partner.
not the most romantic thought - but if you have no kids - it is possible your legal next of kin might be that wanker of a brother you have not spoken to in 20 years, annoying if he walks off with 4 times your annual salary, whilst your wife gets nothing
but I am not a lawyer so this all may be balls.....

Its a good point, and I'm sure its not balls so thankyou for making it!
I cant say its one I've ever thought about though... we do both have wills, and are both freelancers so there's no big employee pay outs to be had but we should probably make sure there are no other implications! -

Jaygee you need to have a quiet word with these lads mate. Alternatively show these sinners the wrath of Jeebus and wreak vengeance on their ass, and their flaming donkey.

So, um, B and I are getting married next Tuesday here in Amsterdam. The plan had been to have a small wedding, just us and a couple of witnesses, but somehow it has grown to us + 28. It's also going to be the first time our families have ever met - wish us luck!
