^^^machines are a load of fucking shit. Free weights with good form are the way to go, as they don't force your body to move through a limited plane/arc that it was never designed to, and which has little functional cross-over.
Don't go diving in with either until you've read up on the basics (and even better, got some tips/coaching from a reputable source), or you'll fuck yourself up good and proper.
Deadlifts and squats are compound exercises, i.e. they work pretty much every muscle in your body. This is why they give you the greatest strength gains. But this also means they eat into your energy reserves massively. Some people include them in their workouts a few days apart. Some do alternate weeks. Some do a block of deadlifting (e.g. 2-4 weeks) and then a block of squatting.
Barbell hack squats are almost a hybrid, although they don't work the posterior chain as much as either deadlifts or (back) squats.
Anyway, I digress.
PS. Loads of info here, and the animated gifs for each exercise are quite good, as far as correct form goes.
