I had a really small wedding and it was lovely, there were 10 people there in total. We haven't regretted it once. Personally I cannot see the point of spending all of your money on 1 day. The point of getting married is to dedicate yourself to another person for life, that doesn't change if there are 2 people there or 200. Nearest and dearest are the important ones not putting on a lavish do that'll take you ages to pay off.
