Hilly routes in/near south london

  • A friend is signing me up to Surrey legs of steel (again), which is a very hilly 80km ride. In Surrey. Really beautiful ride. If you can see through the sweat and tears.

Anyway, I'm as unfit now as I was then, but this time I'm thinking about doing a bit of training!

Does anyone know some good hills to practice on? Preferably around south London.

I recall there's one between Brixton and Herne Hill. Anyone got any good routes they can recommend?

    Cheers

But for content, Anerley Hill is a nice one, Canonbie Rd is a short sharp killer, quite a few ups and downs in the forest hill area, Maze Hill and that one in the park at Greenwich are entertaining and Shooters Hill will keep you grinding for a while. Enjoy.

  • Yeah, cheers guys. I did find that thread, but information on south london hills is fairly sparse in that thread. (excluding the list of s.e. hills in the second post)

Some other people mention a hill here or there , but no real routes.

I'll compile my own and put it on here for future reference...

Canonbie is a murerous ramp if you add it to Forest Hill Rd. (up from Peckham Rye, turn right and right again)...a few laps of that loop are pretty character building...

  • This thread culminated in a nice route that might sort you out.

    Ah, cool. Thanks.

  • just go exploring round that area, there's loads to pick and choose from - but I'd recommend going a shade further and heading out over Sydenham Hill, through Crystal Palace, Anerly, Elmers End Road, and finally finding your way out of town on Laymans Lane and onto some proper hills. Doesn't take long, the roads are pretty smooth, traffic reasonable, and plenty of green. Enjoy.

  • Thanks Chopsicle, that sounds great :)

  • I do love a good hill thread.
