Hello. Hope you've all had a good weekend.
New to here just wanted to introduce myself. 'Hello'
I've been cycling SS/Fixed for 5/6 years. Mostly on bikes that I have rescued from skips and converted. (with a lot of assistance)
I'm really interested/keen to learn bike mechanics, properly. I'd like to be able to deal with all aspects of maintenance and build a bike from frame without assistance.
Completed my first day shadowing a mechanic on Saturday. I left humbled, confuzzled and reassured that I know jack diddley..well more or less!
Anyone who wants to share what they know and/or has time to show me a few tings is more than welcome.I'm just back into riding after a few months out with a broken scaphoid (first ride was around Vicky Park yesterday! :)
Would be nice to meet up with some folks based east and surrounding to go for rides. Though I'm trying to take it very easy and build up confidence. Also, I think my scaphoid has a while to go yet before I have full usage and am free from concerns about impact.I'm a broke rider. Nothing fancy here. Just enjoy the sense of space/freedom I get from cycling.
Hear from some of you soon I hope.

Hello all!
I'm a forum virgin and I live just off Swain's lane in Highgate. I'm wondering if there is a North London Ladies contingent? I have a rather beaten up old condor pista (49"- I'm only little) and I want to go on summertime evening rides but have no-one to go with! :(

Georgie - you should come to North drinks on Tuesday then! At the Flask, from around 6ish.
I live East but go to Norths, because by the end of Tuesday at work I'm sooo ready for hard liquor ;)Tellerbones - Glad that you're back on the bike. I don't know what a scaphoid is but it sounds like something I'd rather not break. I would say maybe potter along to Pub on The Park on Wednesdays for East beers, but apparently Easts is dead (I say apparently as I've not been so can only go on hearsay). so come to Norths!

Easts is going to have to be resuscitated because as soon as I am up to cycling there and back (15 miles, i can puff and pant 7 at the moment) I am GOING.

15 miles?? where to goodness are you based?
edit: I was under the illusion London is small. but it isn't. I've just checked.

Gotcha. Yup - a fair way!
But just so's you know, puffing and panting has a similar effect to go faster stripes. ;) -

oh i like it... I'd have no trouble getting there, it would be the getting home that would be the problem.

but alcohol makes you FLY!

True... it also makes me post stupid things on internet forums at daft times of day. But I guess that is down to lack of practice...

No worries about Easts, Charlotte--'Easts is dead' was only adopted as a slogan to confound the Westies so they wouldn't turn up. ;)

How dastardly!

Well, they started slagging Easts off on its own thread. :)
"They started it, sir/madam!"

Hi Charlotte83
Thanks for tip. Not into beers or the North! :P I have a feeling I may have to adapt...:)
Oliver, so if the east isn't dead what's happening? Do you cycle around Epping much?
Have a good start to the week folks.

oh scaphoid is more or less a broken wrist.

Oliver, so if the east isn't dead what's happening?
Quite a lot of forum people live in this area. The Easts thread is here:
http://www.lfgss.com/thread4261.html
If you search for 'Easts dead', you can see some of the banter. Easts has been well-attended of late, so do join us on a Wednesday if you have time.
Do you cycle around Epping much?
When I go out into Essex, I don't tend to spend much time around Epping, e.g. not in Epping Forest, as I'm not a mountain biker. I go further east, across the valley of the River Roding, and then into the area between Chelmsford and Epping, roughly, sometimes up to Great Dunmow. However, I have to regain this habit after months off the bike.
Some people did a Lea Valley Ride yesterday:

it get smaller the more you ride your bike.
the 11 miles commute (Central London - Wimbledon) doesn't appear that big anymore, just take a while.

hi i'm a forum virgin and need a little help, does anyone know how i can get hold of a basic liner for a bern helmet, as im trying to ride my lovely charge plug bike and learn how to skate for roller derby. thanks for the assistance
-

if you are looking for a roller derby helmet try CaliforniaPro from Club Blue Room (Marble Arch) - which you can also wear on your bike. (or try the London Roller Girls forum - you can probably get a used one from one of the girls and try sizes)

Hello folks, my name's Han, and this is my first post on LFGSS though I've been a lurker for a little while.
I was talking to Nhatt (hello!) in Brixton Cycles a couple of weeks ago and she told me about the Ladies' section so here I am! And she built my wheels!
I live in Brixton, had a go on my mate's fixed Specialized Langster a couple of years ago when I borrowed it for a month whilst he was on his honeymoon. And fell in love with it really. I was riding it around as much as I could and didn't want to give it back!
Anyway, I'm v excited cos tomorrow I'm getting all these bike bits that I've bought over the past year or so made into an actual bike, done by the lovely Brixton Cycles. A 46cm IRO frame, cos I've got v short legs - even the 49cm Langster was a little on the large side for me. It's going to be ace, I can't wait. LittleHeather - did you find a small frame in the end?
I'd love to meet some other folks out there - is anyone a Critical Mass regular? I am, though can't make it tomorrow unfortunately.
I'm still very unfit - the cycling I've done over the past couple of months is the only regular exercise I've done since I broke my ankle in 2002, work completely taking over my life for a while. Even so, I am completely surprising myself with what I'm doing ... I reckon that simply enjoying it is having more of a 'mind over matter' effect and I reckon I'm secretly getting a little fitter although I don't know it yet!
I started keeping a diary - write down how I feel after a ride, roughly how long it took, how far it was. Especially with commuting type rides, you can see quickly how your post-ride feeling changes within a few weeks.
