Cleaning old hubs

Posted on
  • Hi guys, search didn't help.
I found this old Normandy hub and I would like to clean it nice (from the inside as well), what are your advices?
    Thank you!

  • Take it apart, degrease it, polish it, regrease it.
Did you really need a new thread just to know that ?

  • Get some cone spanners of the appropriate size (best to take hub to a bike shop to check the size), grease, degreaser (GT85, white spirit, etc), and some rags. Put something on the floor so that you won't lose all the bearings when you remove the axle. Open it up, hope that the bearing races are still good, clean, regrease, put it all back together again. Easy!!

Somewhere like the Park Tools website has probably got a nice easy guide to doing this with pics.

Then polish with Autosol. Sore thumbs!

  • Drill a hole through the barrel so you can regrease it, rather than taking it apart to do so (later down the line, not initially). Trying to get proper tightness on cup and cone hubs is a grandiose waste of time.
