Most '80s headsets utilise 5/32" steel ball bearings. Most '80s Campagnolo headsets would utilise 3/16" steel ball bearings. A Stronglight A9 might use steel roller bearings. I havent come across a headset that didnt utilise some form of bearing.
Look inside the cups of the headset and you should see a ring of wear. This is where the ball bearings have been sitting previously.
My best guess is it will take 5/32" steel ball bearings. -

hey my ride is a routier too and the bearings are 5/32" like every other non high end bike from around that time. good luck with sorting it
Hi,
I'm working on a new project, this time with a Raleigh Routier frame from the 80's, the frame came with the original headset, but I just noticed that the headset hasn't got any bearings, is that normal?
Should I buy bearings for the headset or just leave it like that?
thanks
