As a starter groupset for daughter 1's first road bike i put on a very good value (£190) sora collection, from ebay. As others have said, upgrade individual parts as they wear out.
Wheels, traditional bent spokes to good hubs and dependable rims don't look as sexy as campagnolo's G3 pattern, but they're a damn sight easier to fix and true when out on the road.
