Usually is the chain ring bolts. This is the first thing I check now, after having dismantled my whole drive train the first time things got creaky.
My current problem is a click which feels like some kind of bind or stiff chain link. But I'm fucked if I can find either nicked tooth or a malfunctioning link.
The click happens on every pedal stroke, and only when I am out of the saddle or putting the power down™
