In fact, all my bikes have similar quality of componentry (if not finish) and I doubt whether 3 x said bikes cost me as much as £995 (if you look hard enough, there are many places where you can purchase old bits for reasonable prices, ebay not always being a marker for market value).

    Yes, second hand does matter, once it's been used it's value goes down, to around 50% value of new (unless the lot is but 6 months old, say...). I'm sorry, but you don't just get to have a jolly on some machine, then try to pro-offer in to the market at the price it cost you (if not more), that's just not cricket! (even if your market is used to paying far above the odds for riding the trendsetter wave).

    I know there's this idea that if someone will buy it for x amount then it is worth x amount, but tbh, if a friend paid this much, I wouldn't know whether to congratulate or console them.
