  • Watched "The Cove" on TV last night which I thought it was very well made. Quite calm and measured in tone but still very upsetting. I had reservations in places about some of the more hippy-ish protagonists, but most time I found that I had a question as to their motives, they answered it. For example, in the film the narator spent some time talking about the intelligence level of dolphins seeming to be citing their extreme intelligence as an argument as to why they should be the subject of this special treatment over say, tuna which are regularly hunted in the same way as the dolphins in the film.

That got me thinking that (despite my emotional reaction to the contrary) appying intelligence as a criteria for ecology was a very slippery slope and one that i wasn't really comfortable with. Just then, the narator explained that (his own personal view was) dolphins were of a level of intelligence where they had clearly shown that they used complex language to comunicate and that they were self-aware and could experience emotions and empathy... which made the trapping and wholesale slaughter all the more horrific. Shocking stuff that will stay with me for quite a long time. I'm off to goofle "IWC" to see what I can do to help things along a wee bit.

Also , been trying to find a torrent of "End of the Line" (the fish based eco-documentary) for ages so was glad to see they're showing that next Tuesday on More4 too. Shall be tuna-ing in for that one no doubt.
