hola.
i'm cycling down to dover next monday to take a ferry to the land of the french and then pedal up to dam.
does anyone have any experience of the a20 and a2 that lead you down that way.
this is my provisonal route.

bit unsure those roads are too suitable although looking at the best way down.
thanks in advance.

NO NO NO! Don't use the A20 or A2 so many other nice ways, modify the route to st margarets that MA3K did a year ago.

I did an almost identical route a few months back - except we kept going on the A20 via Ashford to Folkstone then turned left there. It was all fine - some larger A roads - but if you are used to road riding in the UK nothing to fear!
The last bit from Folkestone along to Dover was interesting - almighty 'col' from sea level up to cliff level, followed by long (fast) descent alongside trucks into Dover. If you want sleepy country roads maybe don't go that way...but its really not that bad, with mostly quite good road surfaces.
We took the ferry the next morning and that day rode through France and Belgium to just inside the Dutch border. Pancake flat all the way, and a little boring tbh... The bits through Holland after that were better, esp along the dykes (as seen in earlier stages of le tour). And all perfectly manageable fixed mind.
I took a 1:200000 map that showed the whole route (London - Dover, France, Belgium, Holland) and that was plenty. In England we just followed A20 signs, France and Belgium we just kept the sea on our left, and in Holland there are signs everywhere.

when i lived in kent i didnt live the A2 at all, going through towns and villages is much nicer and if you plan well, takes no longer.

i would head to the coast as soon as possible and just head along the coast to dover beautiful cycle lanes b roads sea views
longer route but well worth it
the main a roads heading down there are 70mph dual carriageways no fun at all
are you rushing to amsterddam or taking your time
again i would recommend the coast if you are taking your time again great cycle lanes everywhere through belgium and holland
it's a great ride did it a summer or two back try and get on the canalsways they are straight and scenic again -

right then.
back to london, not so sunny london.
what a trip.
ride down to dover and the ferry ended up being a 100 mile slog by the time we hit accommodation in dunkirk, uber hilly. thanks to tommy for the tip and ma3k for the route.
brilliant route if someone wants 90 mile of punishing hills! great routing though and some genuinely fantastic scenery and riding.
the boot up to the dam was done quickly and with no mechanicals, not even a puncture.
the route we rode was complete flat and took in some great parts. highlights being the dams up past vlissingen to rotterdam and canals we skirted up along next too for miles of the route.
sampled many a coffeeshop delight along through holland.
a great week of riding.
if anyone wants any tips or ideas then give us a shout.
would anyone be interested in cycling to dover and then taking a ferry to amsterdam?
and does anyone know the route needed to go there?
cheers
