Cycling book swap

  • I have:

something about Charlie Holland, the first Brit to ride the tour. The guy was from Aldridge, not far from where I grew up.

    Obree - the Flying Scotsman

Seaton - The escape artist & Two wheels

    to swap.

I certainly dont want to swap:

    Hutch - The Hour

Will Fotheringham - PMBOMB (Tom Simpson Bio), Fallen Angel (Coppi Bio), Roule Brittania, and a book about Merkx

I would be interested in The Death of Marco Pantani, and perhaps that book about Robert Millar, although I heard that only Scots find that one interesting

  • Reading The Man Who Cycled The World right now and you're welcome to have it after, or anyone else can.
Hadn't heard of this book, or the tv documentary, picked it up on a whim. He's a whiny little bitch who can't write but don't let that put you off. I've read a few long distance cycling books, best one is Full Tilt by Dervla Murphy but there's a good list here

Might not be what you're after but worth a mention maybe, I'm just very interested in doing some long distance soon.

  • Heroes, Villains and Velodromes.
    Boy Racer
    In Pursuit of Glory
    Chris Hoy The Autobiography
    Tour de Force (Lance)
    The Beautiful Machine
    Its not about the bike
    Every second counts
The man who cycled the world
    The escape artist
    Two wheels.
Give me a shout if you are interested. A few are being borrowed at the moment - but will track them down

  • I'd like to buy a Lonely Planet cycling guide to any European city.

  • Now I am no big reader but this book is thouroughly recommended. one of the few books I have managed to read cover to cover.

  • yeah thats a good book

  • I was in the peloton on the start line, made it through a few of the initial stages and made a few solo breakaways, but didn't have the will to battle on to the finish

  • Here are my bike book tips, they're lent out at the moment but I can track them down if anyone's interested in borrowing them. They're all kind of literary, but hey, if the weather stays this shit there's going to be a lot of time for reading this summer.

Need for the bike - Paul Fournel
A lyrical & sometimes brutal evocation of cycling based on the author's experiences. There's one bit where as a kid he has a fall and the shifter on his downtube goes into his thigh. Fournel's part of the French avant gard literary scene and he's a serious cyclist - this is a great little book.

The Third Policeman - Flan O'Brien
This totally bizarre book which reads like a vivid nightmare was apparently an influence on the show Lost. There's a bit about humans and bikes exchanging characteristics - one of the characters spends so long riding that he sleeps by leaning on his elbow against a wall.

    The Cyclist - Vivian Berbarian
This is a modern book about middle eastern terrorism and food and racing. Pretty cool because the style's unusual & it's also a quick read.

    The Supermale - Alfred Jarry
Jarry's another French author - a surrealist and also a fanatical cyclist. See if you like 'the crucifixion considered as an uphill race' which is a review of JC being crucified reported as if it was a cycling event. Pretty wild.

My friend's also putting together a book of cycling short stories for publication here if there are any writers out there.

  • I'd love to borrow "the need for
the bike" chris, If that's o.k?

  • Oooh thank you malletesta, I'll have a look for those.

  • Yes! Looks like i can play next week! Thanks a million old bean!!

  • You're welcome - I hope you enjoy it.
