my word, i've been giving your reply a long thought....i totally want you to get them. i really like the fact that you want to :)
i dunno, i cant really suggest what to do - i genuinely believe Dave Longstreth to be a musical genius and i dont say that lightly. His music is so expressive in so many ways; his audacity and charisma i just find so impressive....his understanding of melody and rhythm and his meticulous use of both, either restrained, exaggerated or disregarded, is fucking staggering. They are insanely talented and flawless musicians and singers....it makes me wanna throw up! I'm so in awe of them, him. and besides all that they write such perfect pop songs....i really believe you just need accept them and they'll make total sense.
Like Bjork, people can list a ton of reasons why she's 'weird', 'painfully un-listenable' or 'unmusical' but you know its bullshit and you trust her that's why you enjoy her music and 'get it'.
Listen to Bitte Orca, i guess its the easiest to get into (not to be patronising) but my favourite is Rise Above; it is one of the best albums i've ever heard. fuck i love them. They're also incredible live.
Basically, my musical rule of thumb is if's tough to listen to but you want to hear more and if its impressive but you cant work out why, its the fucking nuts. its not gonna be some 'here today, gone tomorrow' style music. It'll be the stuff that you will listen to for years, probably forever. :)
the best music is ALWAYS slow burners, stuff you could quite easily dislike at first but it gets into your mind.
i'm sure i'll be called pretentious or some shit :)
Thanks very much for the honest and comprehensive reply. The main reason why i want to like them is all musicians friends love them, and so does bjork. I'm confident this isn't an emperor's new clothes situation, they do have something. Tbh i want to be patronised (not that you were at all) but the easier the listening the better. I'm definitely going to give them longer to work their magic and take into account how talented they all are. I do want to like them, i guess that's the first step to being a musical sophisticate.
