It's not obligatory. However, there have been people in the past who have joined, got out of the nursery, and then exclusively posted to start threads in classifieds and sell. That's not participating in the community, that's using DK's hard work and time to make a profit. People like that are using the forum as an alternative to e-bay. They should, and for the most part do donate. Those who don't, and are spotted are told how things are run, and most donate after that.
