  • Goods of quality deserve to be used, and used to their limits....same as bikes...especially expensive ones!

  • £375 without silver buckles sounds reasonable for something custom made.

I can't justify this sort of purchase myself, but there are people around who pay more for custom tailored suits and shirts for example (as long as they don't do it in Bangkok).

  • Not repping you but just sharing some experience. I know your reference to Bangkok is the mass made stuff.

Bangkok tailors are quite good if you are looking for a tailored suit, in fact, they source the same materials (albeit different brands) as many London tailors do.

Give them a ring and they will meet you at your hotel room to take your measurement, throw in 20 quid and it will be brought to your door for fitting tomorrow and if any alterations (not in my case) is needed, it will usually be done by the end of the day and brought back for 2nd fitting :)

As for the price, 3 suits for a price of 1 :)

  • I was just going to add that a hand crafted satchel that is of that quality is bloody cheap...as long as it was well looked after you could probably get a couple of hundred years out of one...so not a bad price... (as long as pirates didn't make off with the silver buckles!!;D)

the guys that work at hermes are trained there and once you are in ...you are in,...it's a 7 year apprenticeship I think, thats the difference between buying a vuitton and a hermes, vuittons are made in bangkok by very talented ladies that compared to the average wage are better paid...Just because it's in thailand doesn't mean it's a sweat shop...however...vuitton are still getting them made at about £50 a bag and knocking them out at a grand...though the hermes bag is made by someone that has got thousands of hours experience in one of the worlds oldest leather workshops....thats what is sooo terrible...

anyhow....your bags are nicer...you won't ever see someone with the same bag...

  • Whats the price on the first bag in the pictures (with base metal buckles)? Looks like exactly what im looking for!

  • £375 as discussed above to some peoples approval and to some peoples disgust!

  • Wow, gorgeous looking bags mate! I remember meeting you at the goldsmiths fair two years ago and having a serious drool over your belts! I'd say I'd be very interested in getting a bag or bags done at some point! Great to see you on the forum!

  • Wow small world, well small London, so I guess not the biggest coincidence!

Are you coming again this year? I'm there both weeks this time !

  • Might try and get over alright, I'm actually in Ireland but my girlfriend's family have a place over there so we popped in last time, loved your stuff though! My girlfriend actually works with a silversmith over here and they're planning to come over to London to check out some of the fairs with a view to doing them next year maybe, any recommendations? His stuff is quite cool, completely self thought and very nice organic style to it...

  • I need to put my prices up!

    Great work by the way.

    Yes, Archie's Grobags, you do!

    To Webof
I would suggest, if you wanted to diversify a bit, you could try out making something extremely slimline and smart that works as a briefcase and pannier... model it on a flash bike like a Moulton (or even call them up and offer to make a custom bag for Moultons) ...

also think about something rather neat that would work as a barbag/mini-saddlebag ... small enough for just a water proof, some tools, money, phone and perhaps a hipflask ...

    call that^ my twopenn'orth.

  • Yep, barbag is a good shout.

  • Yeah, there's not much out there that's in this vein, apart from the Brooks tool roll, that I know of, or the large duck n leather ones like Gilles Berthoud ...

btw Webof it would be important in a barbag that you work out a way to make it secure from swinging/bouncing, not just straps at the top to go over handlebars: I always think an adjustable tension strap (meeting a drilled metal piece) that reaches down the brake hole would be a good alternative to a bunch of the current solutions around (klick fix, or the Berthoud system of front rack and a metal piece at the bars that the bag loops onto)

Also any bar strap design would have to be innovative: some kind of quick release would be just the ticket, perhaps working on this kind of principal (a lamp bracket but the binding mechanism is what I'm referring to...)

  • Do you have examples of the bags? I am looking for something very similar to the first design.
