Any thoughts on the mongoose maurice?

  • I'd replace the whole bike, personally.

  • I have ridden it a fair bit before buying it and those were the two things that I thought where whack, probably will give it a little time before making any rash decisions, the bright orange is a little bit over the top might be why im looking to change it already.

  • Paint it.

  • I've been riding the maurice for over a week now and the saddle has bedded in just fine. I dont see any reason to change the chain. It works ! I have shortened the bars by a couple of inches though as i found them a touch too wide. Over all I find it a really good ride.

  • i love the way it looks and have just brought one today

  • Any reviews or thoughts on the 2011 Maurice FS???

    Thinking of purchasing one.

    Cheers.

    Ash!!

  • the purple one?
    ask edscoble.

Take a step back, spend a month perusing threads on here, be informed, you'll change your mind. Merry Christmas!

  • the purple one?
    ask edscoble.

Incidentally we do have the 2011 one in the Wimbledon Evans, the purple one is more aimed at trick (with a slightly beefy fork), and the black one with blue spoke is the normal one.

I feel the Mongoose is actually a very good bicycle for the money, it handle well, weight pretty reasonable and appear decent, the biggest downside is obvious the horrible appearance naturally, but despite that, it's a good bike.

  • I was looking into purchasing the red one to be honest.

I'm only after something cheap with a flip flop hub that over time I can improve.

    I'll take the plunge.

    Cheers.

  • we used to get last years orange and black model in and it looked fff'in horrible, that black one ain't too bad in comparison, without the blue bits it would actually be pretty nice. For the money i do think its a good deal, you get a bike similarly specced component and weight wise to many other otp singlespeeds for a decent amount less, have they put the price up by much for the 2011?

  • Currently it's 370, forget how much it was last year.

  • I think £370 is a good price based upon some of the other bikes I have looked at.

I considered building my own fixie, although I did that with my mountain bike and I cant be bothered to do it again. Plus, my mountain bike cost me alot of time, money and effort to complete and I can't be bothered with another build project as I do tend to take it over the top.

This bike sums up a good starter for me and my introduction to the world of fixies.

I'll let you know how i get on.

I think you already knew want you wanted to do. Sorry for my snide "no" but we aren't a therapy group to come to for affirmation of your feelings.

The most important thing is to buy a bike, use it and then see what you don't like and what you break and replace accordingly.

    Have fun

Don't be sorry, I don't read or take into consideration a post that has no value to the thread topic.

Incidentally, thanks for the info in your latest post outlining the subject of purchasing a bike and using it. Top advice that!

Perhaps this should be a therapy group based upon your advice, your quite good at it!

    Ash!!

  • ive bought one, will collect it on my birthday 9211,
will post a review here later, first single speed bike in about 30 years, started commuting on a Hybrid raleigh last year, not ridden since October, should i go Fixed gear straight away or do a few miles on the freehub side....advice p l e a s e ..

  • try both, just turn the wheel around

  • Get the shop to check the cog is tight on the masurice if you plan on going fixed.
Replace the rim tape ASAP it's shit and check for burring on rim holes while you have the tape off, they have some badly drilled rims out there. Replace tyres ASAP too, they are super shit.

  • Get the shop to check the cog is tight on the maurice if you plan on going fixed.

    1+

when we get our Maurice from Evans, the cog and lockring were already screwed in, however we hasn't touched it and set the bike on freewheel (as it's the most popular choice).

So as Tommy said, get it check to see if the cog and lockring is tight on the Maurice.

  • I have the 2010 and am really happy with it for my firs SS/Fixed bike!

I second the advice on the the rim tape its awful! I went through 3 innertubes as a beginner wondering if a spoke was faulty if I had done it when fitting it etc.

I complained to Evans and they without questioning it sent me some proper rim tape and 4 new innertubes.

also consider adding extra cable ties or taping the break cable(rear as it moves too much and will cause scratches)

Not sure whats up with the tyres? they are pretty good i thought and have excellent reviews! unless they have changed what they supply mine had the continental ultra sport tyres on which had nearly a 100 reviews at about 5 stars.

Also the 2010 model can be bagged for £270 at evans... is the 2011 really £100 better. http://www.evanscycles.com/search.html?query=maurice&x=0&y=0

  • those reviews must be from idiots. The conti sport tyres have no puncture resistance, which in itself is not necessary an issue as not all tyres do, but city tyres usually do, it's more cheap crap tyres that don't or lightweights for racing that don't. The biggest problem is that they have a very weak side wall that splits very easily without warning.

  • Ha you know what I actually kind of agree.

I never had a single puncture through the tire and currently up to 8ish months of road riding 20 miles a day.

However about a month ago I did have a sidewall start to bulge out, luckily I noticed and replaced it so yeh you do have a point.

They arent the worst tyre though, certainly not something i would whip off straight away.

However my replacements WILL be a better tyre.

  • Nearly all OTP bicycles tend to come with cheap/poor quality tyres, some are fine (i.e. doesn't puncture) but generally most of them are surprisingly thin.

Just get some decent strong tyres, like the Bontrager hardcase one.

  • I'm new to single speeds too. I saw the Mongoose online and the you tube vids, and was waiting on a local bike shop to call me when they had one ready for a test ride.

In the meantime I was browsing ebay and put a bid in on a Kona Paddywagon, and won it. It's a great bike, as it turns out (I was a bit worried buying s/h and not knowing that much about bikes), but I saw the Mongoose in the flesh the other day and it looks really nice (yeah I know, it's very orange, but it's really eyecatching).

Do I need, can I afford another SS bike?
