Games have actually got a lot easier. I noticed this first when playing DOOM in the mid-Nineties. And save game functions have made it so much easier than when you had to play games in one go. If you remember a game like Paradroid, it became insanely difficult after two levels or so, and you couldn't save. Not that that would have done you much good, of course.
Most notable, the 'autosave' feature that save the last 'checkpoint' before you die, quite literally seconds before dying making it a lots easier to contiuned the games.
GTA is a good example, wasn't long ago we have to drive all the way to the nearest safehouse so we can save our games, but in GTA4, it's not necessary, it got autosave, and the fact that you can 'grab' a taxi to get back to your place make it a lots easier.
