How did the forum ever get 1,492 users online when i'm getting "server really busy" messages with just 978?

Valid question.

Most likely right now 1 of the 5 web servers is busy, as the site is whizzing along on the others.

I'll bounce the one causing trouble.

2 of the servers were busy... they were rolling over their syslog files. So those two stuttered for a minute... everything else is well within operational parameters.

Basically... should be fine.

Is that the Mac one? Fuck knows. I just printed an enormous doc authored in Word for Windows, and the Mac version has made it a bit screwy. Unbelievable that there isn't any parity between the two versions of the same product for different platforms.

More like, WTF were 1,492 people on the 29th of March of 2008 at 17:19, doing here!? Were we giving out candy?

By contrast, the most users ever simultaneously online on AmsterdamFG is 22.

Wasn't the 1492 when we moved over from vanilla? That was how many users there were then I think. (all this were fields etc)

I refer the honourable gentleman to my earlier answer.

The most users online came as a result of:
1) Moving to newer servers when we moved from Vanilla to vBulletin
2) Yahoo search spider going apeshit when it suddenly detected an entirely differently structured site

Yahoo was so pooh, that they almost knocked us off the internet that day as their spiders didn't play nicely with the robots.txt file that we had at the time.

So it was Yahoo's doing.

I've always felt that I should reset that counter.

Do it.

ALways thought it was too much, not on a bad way, just really too much kinda way.
Strangely, this week I witnessed something quite remarkable, the total opposite. Which I had
never seen before, the forum absolutely empty..... besides me and Malasyan.

Plus the MySQL server does a reboot at that point for a cold backup, and that clears the session table which makes it momentarily appear that no-one is online.

my favourite was that Cinelli green/yellow low pro he have, I forget his name but he's a (surprise) graphic designer near Vijzelgracht I think.
