Cable car across the Thames

Does this not just sounds like a pointless waste of money though? It'd be cool and all but who's actually going to use it except for a novelty?

Could work like the london eye and attract tourists and make money, as well as serve london commuters (who could use an oyster card) who do need another thames crossing in east London.

time scale seems tight though it does make sense to aim for the completion by the olympics.
