  • I think reggae is something that make the white middleclass feel a bit cultured and 'I'm not racist cos I like reggae'
    I find it so dull

I'd seriously rather go to a Chris De Berg concert than listen to 3minutes of reggae

His last concert was at a Homebase car park in Doncaster. He sold it out and had all the bored housewives frothing when he crooned "The Lady is Dead". Wild man.

That said, have you seen his daughter? Maybe she should be in the yentzing thread.

  • Makes me cringe when I see whiteys at NHC or some reggae gig trying to get down and 'funky', feelin irie
Fuck off and take Ali Campbell with you >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

You're obviously pretty hung up on the race aspect.

So let me get this straight, it's ok for black people because it's somehow a part of their collective culture? And because it's not a 'white' invention it's not for you and me?

Did they sell solvents at the gig?

And considering that virtually all of the modern music we listen to has its origins in black music - perhaps we shouldn't listen to any.

  • And because it's not a 'white' invention it's not for you and me?

I look at the music as a circle of influence. Different cultures feed one another.

Seen as "black" reggae, dancehall, hiphop, raggeaton, soca, baila funk, calypso would never exist without The Beatles, country, Kraftwerk, french ballroom dances etc.
Predominantly white rock (and metal) would never evolve without rhythm'n'blues and blues, hiphop etc.

    Racist!

  • Yeah, I like my music segregated.

  • I don't like cricket...

    Oh no!

    i love it!

  • Don't you walk through my words.

  • I don't like reggae either. I find it boring.

I care not for the race aspect, but I also find most white reggae fans insufferably annoying.

  • But he's yellow.

    This ^.

  • Has this been resolved?

  • Fuck no!
*I-man serve Selassie I continually. No matter what the weak heart say. And I know that I & I is like a tree, plant by the river of water, and not even the dog that piss against the wall of Babylon shall escape this judgment. For I & I know that all of the youth shall witness the day that Babylon shall fall! *

    This

  • Oasis
    Reggae
    Lady Gaga
    JLS

All in the same shitpot to me

  • Lady fucking Gaga. At last we can something in common, G.

  • Biffy Clyro - I mean, wtf is that all about?

    I like reggae

I do not get why many white reggae fans inhale joint smoke and then hold it and try to talk without breathing out in a croaky voice. Absolute throbbers.

  • On the reggae theme, can I add stuff white faux-reggae-esque bands like propaghandi?

  • I do not get how you can live without vinegar. It's been bothering me all weekend. Especially when I was pouring a pint of the stuff into my de-fucking-lectable green tomato chutney. It's absolutely, unbelieveably, nice. I had some for breakfast.

    I get chutney.

You see, I think this might be my problem. I've never really given reggae much time because everyone who proclaims themselves a big fan* seems to be such a posturing weapon that I can't take it seriously. Like most genres, just listening to what gets subsumed into mainstream culture is never really a good start if you're looking to appreciate it I guess. Anyone willing to recommend me a good starting point into really decent dub? PM's please, I don't want to clog this thread up even more.

*this is totally in my experience. I'm sure there are loads of big reggae fans who don't think they're Jah born and stuck in a white mans body, I just haven't met any. My entire experience with reggae nights has been 'culturally aware' blowhards trying to turn enjoying a bit of spliff and having a few Trojan compilations into a fucking personality. Tragic and unbelievably annoying.

    Dub thread

  • I do not get pretty much any music that's in the charts. especially that remix of "you've got the love", what a pile of wank. it's just all so awful.
