In any case what lynx says is right. Good prep, sand, clean, primer then another light sand with fine wet & dry ( for a good key ) and lots of light coats. The first coat should be translucent and still be able to see plenty of primer. Build it up slowly. then put a clear over the top.
You can get OK results. I have done many repairs to car panels like this and they always lasted well enough.
