• Having completed my Surly build I was looking for a new project and a colleague at work showed up this week on a rather beautiful Raleigh 'Misty' or 'Mixte' bike. She told me she was going to get rid of it because of its clanking rear mech and its weight, which is largely down to the fact it is running its original steel rim wheels.

I can't bear the thought of such a gorgeous ladies' frame going to the skip, so I offered to do the necessary, and thought that the lovely people of this forum, with their unwanted derailleurs and taste for track wheels, might be able to help.

I need a 5-speed mech, and a pair of alloy 700c wheels, with or without a 5-speed casette on the rear. Can anyone help?

Here's a picture of someone else's Misty, so you can see what is at stake here:

  • You say 700c wanted, but according to the flickr thread originals were 27's - if it's any help I've got a nearly new pair of 27" wheels, bit of a mix of hubs and rims (from memory ones Weineman the other Rigida) but they're both alloy. Takes a screw on block, should be easy to source a 5spd, or dare I say stick a single on and you won't need the rear mech :) £20 including a pair of half decent Michelin World Tour tyres (+tubes etc) with brown (dirty) sidewalls. PM if interested. Collect SE1

  • There's a set of alloy 700c quick release wheels with a 5-speed Regina cog and good tires in the garage.

    £20 for the set.

  • i got a shimano RSX rear derailleur and front mech from herne hill jumble for £15 if you want it. PM me if you want it.

  • I got a raleigh 5 speed derailleur you can have for free. pick up from brockley.

  • Guys, you've done me proud. Mr Di Corsa was right about the standard fitting being a 27 inch, so I'm taking him up on his offer. DMC - my apologies for the confusion.

    Stallionlegs - PM'ed.

Skoota - thanks for the offer, mate, but I'll try the free mech first. I'm trying to keep her costs down.

  • Here she is with new wheels courtesy Mr Di Corsa and a complete strip-down and re-build. Thanks for all the help and advice guys.

That's my Fillmore in the background...

  • Good work Sharky, lookin' tidy. Glad it all worked out. Hope your efforts are appreciated!? Cheers H

  • Thanks mate - Amalia (my friend) was over the moon, couldn't believe how different it felt. I actually cycled it home before doing the work and couldn't believe she rode it every day - front wheel bent, scraping the mudguards and brake; back wheel properly buckled so it felt like you were on a small horse; bottom bracket bearing grinding with lack of grease. She bought me a drawerful of Green and Blacks chocolate to say thanks, which always goes down well with me...

  • Good job Sharky, advise her to lock up her back wheel as well, as its a bugger when you come back to find it gone.

  • I have a spare lock I'll lend her - I'd hate to see that wheel half-inched.

  • Sorry for the buuuuuump but... I'm in the exact same position as the OP. Does anyone have a spare set of alloy 27 x 1 1/4 wheels sitting around they'd let go of cheap (and post to Glasgow)? Bonus if they come with tires because the ones of my current wheels look shot but no biggie if not.

  • Oooh me too. London based with a poorly Misty. No bleeding wheels. As I said before Sharkstar, I could have a project for you. I deal in Green and Blacks and a bit of cash. Please respond via here first as I am in the nursery. If you can't do it, if you know of a spare set of wheels going anywhere and I can try to learn mechanics.
